Casita 3 – 10x10in
This abstract landscape painting is part of the Casitas (little homes) series focused on community and what it means to stick together through the ups and downs of life.
The idea for this series sprung from memories of my tenacious grandmother and her sisters in their small, but colorful homes in a tight knit neighborhood of Ponce, Puerto Rico. They lived a short walking distance from each other, and would help each other with cooking, chores, and even walk to the town’s cathedral together. It’s only in recalling these memories that it dawns on me – these women survived the Spanish flu pandemic, losing family to WWII, the Great Depression, and after decades of hardship and raising their families, they still stuck together by each other’s side to move forward together.
